Refunds

Return money to the payer of a completed UAE payment, in part or more than once.

A refund sends money from your account back to the payer of a payment that has already settled. You use it when an order is cancelled, a line is returned, or the payer was charged more than they should have been. Refunds are live for UAE payments.

When You Can Refund

Spare can start a refund only after the payer's bank has accepted the original payment. The payment status must be AcceptedCreditSettlementCompleted or AcceptedWithoutPosting.

A payment that is still in progress, or one the bank has rejected, cannot be refunded. Wait until the payment reaches one of those two statuses, then start the refund. The calls themselves are on Issue a Refund.

Partial Refunds

You choose the amount. Send less than the original payment when you only need to return part of it, or send the full amount when you need to return all of it. Spare also accepts an amount above the original payment, when that is what your own rules call for.

Spare checks two things. The amount must be a positive value with two decimal places, up to 99999999.99, and the currency must match the original payment. Spare does not compare your amount with the original payment, and Spare does not add up refunds you have already created. You decide what is valid before you call.

Multiple Refunds

You can refund the same payment more than once. Each refund is its own payment. Spare does not cap how many you create, and Spare does not block a later refund because an earlier one is still open or has already settled.

Two Ways to Send the Money

You can ask Spare to create the refund payment for you. You authorize that payment at your bank, and the payer receives the money through Open Finance. Spare sends it from the account that received the original payment, unless you set debtorBankAccountId to a different account you have registered.

You can also pay the payer yourself, through your own bank or another channel. Spare then gives you the payer's refund account so you can match the right person. The account identifier is masked. Spare does not return the full IBAN, and that call does not move any money.

Both ways start from the same completed payment. Issue a Refund walks through the preparation, the two calls, and what the responses look like.

What the Original Payment Must Include

If you already know the payer's account, send it as debtorAccount when you create the payment request. You can refund later without adding an extra consent permission.

If you do not know the payer's account, add ReadRefundAccount to consentPermissions on that same request. The payer agrees to it when they authorize. Without that permission, Spare cannot ask the bank for the refund account, and the refund cannot start.
